Navigation database – one of my favorite projects

The Hamburg-based company “parson AG“, which specializes in high-quality technical editing, was commissioned to explain how a navigation database works for the “Navigation Data Standard (NDS) e. V.” association. It is now impossible to imagine every vehicle and every smartphone without these small but useful everyday aids. Most people use this practical feature without realizing how much technology, logic and intelligence is involved, how many modules are interlinked, how they are stored in databases or downloaded live from the Internet. Even the first briefing was extremely exciting.

Navigation system: Display of individual software modules that work together in parallel when setting up and calling up a navigation route.

Navigation databases: a complex interaction

So it was also very exciting for me to delve into these depths of technology and, in lively communication with the customer, to develop a visual language, a color scheme, icons and finally a structure chart which represents the modules, their relationships to each other and finally the overall combination. This is what the user ultimately sees. There was also very positive feedback: I was told that this graphic contributed a great deal to the overall understanding of the system.

The graphic has been refined multiple times over several years, to be adapted to current technical developments. The collaboration with parson AG is always very pleasant and friendly.
